Two things above all others shaped Greek civilization and the remarkable mythology that arose from it: landscape and language. The geography of Greece forced the ancient Greeks to become seafarers; no Mediterranean country was so exposed to the sea. And since Greece’s rugged interior virtually closed off its mainland from the European continent, its people were reliant on sail and oar for communication.
